Modest but venerable ferry still serves Fla.’s St. Johns River (VIDEO)

(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) — After 156 years, the Fort Gates Ferry is still carrying passengers and cargo across the St. Johns River, the St. Petersburg Times newspaper reported in a feature story. The 20-foot launch pushing a 40-foot barge can fit two vehicles at a time. It is Florida’s oldest ferry route, and the boat itself is a century old.
