MITAGS announces online and blended courses

The following is text of a news release from the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS):

(BALTIMORE) — The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies has partnered with Learn America to offer online and blended learning courses.

Coupled with MITAGS’ maritime education and training expertise, the new online and blended courses will allow students to reduce time spent on campus, yet still provide the high quality education to which they have become accustomed. In addition, MITAGS will offer several non-U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approved courses that will be an online experience only, powered by Learn America.

Learn America’s online courses have been developed and designed with KOLB’S 4 STAGE experiential student-centric learning cycle in mind. Topics contain animated video explanations and sample problems to help students with different learning modalities. These online-only, non-USCG approved courses have been rolled out first. Additional online courses and blended learning courses will be launched at a later date, once USCG approval has been achieved.

“With MITAGS now offering computer-based training (CBT), it is our hope that we will be able to assist mariners with their educational needs with non-traditional offerings,” said Eric Friend, director of MITAGS. “In addition, our hope is that our mariners can spend more of their valuable off time away from our campuses, and enhance their overall educational experience once they come to MITAGS for an abbreviated time frame.”

Using Learn America’s e-content, students will be able to study and review assigned topics in the curriculum at their own pace. Throughout each course, formative quizzes provide students with immediate feedback on their work and meaningful analysis of their level of comprehension. Students are then given the opportunity to revisit areas of weakness or proceed to the next topic.

Other benefits of online learning include custom learning environments, lower costs, and more time spent with family in between work assignments. These online courses also allow MITAGS to offer an additional variety of courses utilizing current resources, with additional support from Learn America.
