Mississippi River reopened after fuel spill at lock (UPDATE)

The following is the text of a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard:

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) — The Mississippi River is reopened near Granite City, Ill., after cleanup operations at Lock and Dam 27 were completed Friday.

An auxiliary lock was opened at the Lock and Dam 27 site for commerce to continue.

The towing vessel Gregory David was transiting the lock and dam and was damaged, rupturing a tank with approximately 20,000 gallons of fuel aboard. The spill was reportedly contained within the lock.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) — The Coast Guard is responding to a fuel spill at Lock and Dam 27 on the Mississippi River near Granite City, Mo., on Thursday.

A vessel transiting the lock and dam was reportedly damaged, rupturing a fuel tank. The fuel tank holds approximately 20,000 gallons, which is reportedly contained in the lock and dam.

The Mississippi River is closed at Lock and Dam 27 until cleanup operations are complete.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
