Mass. lawmakers approve tug, pilot escorts for fuel barges in bay

(NEW BEDFORD, Mass.) — Both houses of the Massachusetts legislature have approved a bill to provide tugboat and pilot escorts to fuel barges in Buzzards Bay, the Standard-Times newspaper reported. A Bouchard barge spilled 98,000 gallons of fuel in the bay in 2003, and lawmakers want to prevent a similar disaster. The measure awaits Gov. Deval Patrick’s signature.
