The following is the text of a press release issued by MARPOL Training Institute Inc.:

(MIDDLETOWN, Calif.) — The MARPOL Training Institute, Inc. announces the release of its Navigating Ballast Water Management (NBWR) training program, a multi-media, computer-based training, officers and crew can take aboard ship or onshore that teaches how to comply with the IMO Ballast Water Convention.

The two-hour course, delivered by engaging animated lecturers, includes an electronic version of IMO’s Ballast Water Regulations (2004) as a reference, most screens in the program linking directly to a page in the regulations.  After completing the course, trainees take an “open book” assessment to confirm they have learned the material.

Vessels currently must comply with ballast water exchange regulations. Soon your vessels will have a ballast water treatment system installed.  Beyond the technical details of operating ballast water treatment systems, officers and crew should fully understand the implications of the aquatic nuisance species problem.  They must know how to comply with all documentation and reporting procedures to avoid fines and penalties.
