(VALLEJO, Calif.) — Mare Island Dry Dock (MIDD) has informed the city of Vallejo that it has permanently closed its Mare Island facility, resulting in the loss of more than 80 full-time union and non-union jobs.
The commercial dry-dock company, providing repair services to the maritime industry since 2013, has been a significant contributor to the local economy, supporting jobs and generating economic activity for Vallejo, Solano County, and the surrounding region.
According to MIDD, the closure stems from unforeseen business circumstances, including the loss of a critical U.S. Coast Guard contract that had an immediate and material impact on the company’s financial stability. Despite efforts to secure additional financing and contracts, MIDD determined that continuing operations was no longer viable.
“This company was built on hard work, long days, problem-solving, and a deep commitment to getting the job done right,” MIDD said in a statement on its website. “Along the way, we were fortunate to work with an amazing group of employees, customers, vendors, and friends who believed in us and supported what we were building. You became more than business contacts – you became part of our story.
“The outpouring of support from the community on social media has been truly overwhelming and deeply appreciated. Your kind words, messages, and shared memories have meant more to us than we can express. We are truly grateful for the relationships, memories, and trust you shared with us over the years. Thank you for being part of our journey and allowing us to be part of yours.”
MIDD has committed to working with local agencies to assist affected employees. In response, the city of Vallejo has coordinated with the Solano County Workforce Development Board to ensure workers have timely access to job search assistance, retraining programs, and other resources. David Hubble, president and executive director of the Workforce Development Board, and his team are actively coordinating support for impacted employees.
The city is committed to helping displaced workers transition to new opportunities. The city is also deeply committed to expanding maritime and other commercial activities and job opportunities on Mare Island. The city recently engaged a consultant to attract new federal funding and other investment to expand shipbuilding and ship repair on Mare Island and reinvigorate Vallejo’s waterfront. This effort is expected to create future opportunities on Mare Island and help return skilled workers to the local maritime industry.
