(MARINETTE, Wis.) — Big investments, manufacturing techniques borrowed from the auto industry and a more engaged work force have revamped Marinette Marine, Reuters reported. Parent company Fincantieri SpA invested $100 million in recent years to transform the 1940s-era shipyard, where seven littoral combat ships are under construction. Jan Allman, a veteran of the auto business who took over as president of Marinette Marine last year, walks the shipyard every day to get tips from workers about how to improve production.
