Kluber Lubrication introduces biodegradable stern tube oils

(LONDONDERRY, N.H.) — Kluber Lubrication, a worldwide manufacturer of specialty lubricants, has introduced Kluberbio RM 2, a series of biodegradable synthetic stern tube oils for the lubrication of propeller bushes and shaft seals in fixed-pitch and controllable-pitch propellers.

Even small amounts of oil leakage through propeller water-side seals caused by operational wear, accidents or incorrect operation can result in a high environmental impact when mineral oil-based lubricants are used. Containing more than 90 percent of renewable raw materials, Kluberbio RM 2 oils are biodegradable and non-toxic to marine organisms. They bear the European Ecolabel and comply with the requirements of 2013 Vessel General Permit issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“These new stern tube oils provide good resistance to oxidation and hydrolysis, as well as thermal stability,” said Ben Bryant, marine market manager for Kluber Lubrication NA LP. “This results in extended oil service life and reduced lubricant consumption and disposal costs.”

Kluberbio RM 2 oils are approved by leading propeller shaft seal manufacturers, and offer ideal viscosity-temperature behavior, which facilitates start-up of propellers at low temperatures. It forms a thick lubricating film at elevated temperatures ensuring good wear protection. Kluberbio RM 2 oils are miscible with stern tube oils based on mineral oil, so easy changeover is possible.
