(SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.) — The crew of the Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw were shocked to discover that their icebreaker narrowly missed killing one of four deer that ran into its path, the Sault Ste. Marie Evening News newspaper reported. The cutter was clearing a path through ice in the Upper St. Mary’s River when the deer appeared, and one of them wandered in the path of the vessel’s bow. The doe fell through the ice and was caught in the water briefly but managed to free itself, pass in front of the icebreaker safely and rejoin the others.
