(MASSENA, N.Y.) — A bulk carrier stuck in ice in the Snell Lock is blocking other ships on the St. Lawrence Seaway, North Country Public Radio reported.
For two days tugboats have been trying to free Federal Biscay, which is carrying a cargo of soybeans. The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. said there is heavy ice buildup on the lock wall and on the ship's hull. No damage has been reported.
Four other ships trying to exit the Seaway before it closes for the season are now blocked, raising the question as to whether they will have to spend the winter there. If this happens, officials say they believe it would be a first for the waterway.
