(NOME, Alaska) — A ice-hardened Russian tanker may be hired to deliver 1.5 million gallons of fuel to Nome this winter, Alaska Public Radio reported. Nome’s harbor has been iced in after the recent severe storms, and a Delta Western tug and barge were not able to get through to make the crucial delivery. Russia’s Vitus Marine may make the trip in late December under an agreement with the local native corporation, and the Coast Guard icebreaker Healy may stay in the area until the job is done.
