Historic Chicago freighter might be converted to barge

St Marys Challenger

(CHICAGO) — St. Marys Challenger, the oldest U.S.-flag merchant vessel in active service, is facing an expensive upgrade and might be converted to a barge, CBS Chicago reported. The 552-foot freighter needs a new engine and possibly new plating in the engine room area, its owner says. The ship, formally known as Medusa Challenger, was well known in the 1970s for tying up downtown traffic on its trips through the city.
