Hilton Head pleads for new bridge fender after vessel collision

(HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.) — Town officials are urging the state transportation department not to delay the replacement of a bridge fender after the previous fendering system was destroyed by a tugboat or barge, the Island Packet newspaper reported. The problem is underneath the J. Wilton Graves Bridge. Officials say the bridge could be damaged seriously if another collision occurs before a new fender is installed.
