German shipper fined $1.2 million for failing to report vessel damage

(LONG BEACH, Calif.) — A German shipping company has been fined $1.2 million for failing to report damage to one of its cargo ships after it arrived at the Port of Long Beach with a crack in its hull, the Long Beach Press Telegram reported. The U.S. Attorney's Office said the ship, M/V Bellavia, may have leaked fuel oil into the ocean. The incident was brought to light when crewmembers furnished evidence, including pictures and video footage, to the U.S. Coast Guard.
