Freighter with invasive ‘Red Baron’ grass ordered out of Baltimore

(BALTIMORE, Md.) — A Turkish freighter was turned away from the Port of Baltimore after U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspectors found an invasive weed inside, the Baltimore Sun newspaper reported. The inspectors spotted cogon grass weed seed among wood packing in a container of tile. The so-called “Red Baron” grass is one of the world’s 10 worst invasive plant species.
