(PANAMA CITY, Fla.) — A maritime pilot died after falling from a ladder while disembarking a bulk carrier Jan. 12 near Panama City.
Capt. Phillip Brady, 46, fell about 15 feet into the water while transferring from the Singapore-flagged Lowlands Luck, according to local media reports. He was recovered by the ship’s crew within about 2 minutes but was unresponsive. The U.S. Coast Guard transported him to a local medical facility, where he was pronounced dead.

Brady had been a pilot in Panama City for the past six years. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 2001.
“Capt. Brady was a respected and dedicated professional mariner whose loss is felt profoundly throughout the maritime community. He is survived by his fiancee and two young children,” the St. Andrew Bay Pilots Association said in a prepared statement. “We ask the public to keep Capt. Brady’s family and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
The incident is under investigation.
