Final ‘salty’ of 2009 departs Duluth-Superior, marking a down year

(DULUTH, Minn.) — The final “salty” of the season departed Duluth-Superior, marking the end of a very difficult year, radio station KUWS reported. Only 60 oceangoing ships called at the Twin Ports in 2009, compared to recent yearly highs of 130 to 150. The BBC Italy was the last departing vessel this year, and the St. Lawrence Seaway closes for the season next week.
