Fellow captain: El Faro's Davidson had 'solid plan' for avoiding hurricane

(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.) — A fellow captain testified Tuesday that he warned El Faro that Hurricane Joaquin was intensifying beyond what had been forecast, but he said Capt. Michael Davidson "had a solid plan" for handling the situation, the Florida Times-Union reported. Kevin Stith, captain of El Faro’s sister ship El Yunque, told Coast Guard investigators that he sent an email to Davidson about the storm as El Yunque headed north to avoid it. Davidson replied that he had altered his route to the south and expected to be on the back side of the hurricane in a few hours. El Faro lost propulsion and sank Oct. 1 amid the storm, killing all 33 aboard.
