EPA still accepting public comment on ballast treatment plan

(MILWAUKEE, Wis.) — The Environmental Protection Agency is still accepting public comment on a proposal to prevent invasive species from entering U.S. waters through the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel newspaper reported. Ballast water invaders are to be treated as any other pollutant, according to a lawsuit that is forcing the EPA to develop a plan. Many stakeholders prefer a national solution rather than allowing each state to develop its own distinct regulation.
