EPA agrees to enforce tighter ballast-water rules for oceangoing ships

(CLEVELAND) — The Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to drop an appeal of a court decision that forces regulators to impose stricter ballast-water-treatment rules on oceangoing ships, the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper reported. Great Lakes environmental groups praised the move, which means the EPA will need to begin enforcing tighter invasive-species-prevention measures on commercial ships by 2013. The standards are expected to be different than U.S. Coast Guard rules that will be announced soon.
