(MAYNARD, Mass.) — Ecochlor Inc. has announced that a contract for 55 Ecochlor ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) has been signed with Scorpio Tankers Inc. for retrofit on their product carriers. Scorpio Tankers will also become a minority investor in Ecochlor. MID-SHIP Capital advised Ecochlor on the transaction.
Scorpio Tankers is a leading international provider in the transportation of refined petroleum products. The product carriers that will be retrofit with the Ecochlor system range between 38,000 to over 100,000 dwt. Installations are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year and continue to the end of 2022.
Ecochlor is the only company utilizing patented chlorine dioxide (ClO2) treatment technology for ballast water treatment. The Ecochlor system uses a two-step process to treat ballast water – filtration followed by disinfection with chlorine dioxide. System effectiveness is not impaired by variations in salinity, temperature, turbidity, organics, and vibration. The Ecochlor BWTS is the only U.S. Coast Guard type-approved technology that does not require treatment or neutralization on discharge.
