(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.; Feb. 19, 2009) Crowley transported and delivered 11 oversized electrical transformers in Costa Rica this week to be installed at a hydroelectric dam in the country. The units, which were shipped with Crowley as part of an ongoing project move, will help convert water energy into electricity for cities and towns.
The transformers, each 11 feet tall and weighing more than 10 long tons, were manufactured by a Mississippi-based company and loaded in Port Everglades aboard Crowley’s Ro/Ro ship Ambassador for the trip to Limon, Costa Rica. Crowley utilized 48-foot flatbed trailers for the move.
Crowley has a longstanding history and track record for handling oversized, out-of-gauge cargo. The company has the specialized equipment, vessels, experience and attention to detail to carry out even the most complex cargo shipments.

This week’s transformer move is the latest example of Crowley’s penchant for handling large, unusual, heavy and odd-sized cargo. Just last month, Crowley delivered an incinerator to Tortola to replace the island’s existing trash disposal unit. The government contracted Crowley to move 42 individual pieces, which were handled with specialized equipment including 10 flatbeds and four open-top containers. The largest of the pieces was 30 feet long and 13.5 feet high and wide and weighed 80,000 pounds.
