Congress approves Navy’s plan to acquire former Hawaii Superferries

(NORFOLK, Va.) — Congress has approved the U.S. Navy’s purchase of the two former Hawaii Superferries from the U.S. Maritime Administration, the Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported. The approved expenditure is $35 million, and the vessels are expected to be put to work in a military sealift capacity. MarAd took possession of the vessels after Hawaii Superferry Inc.’s bankruptcy, and the agency later attempted to auction them.
