Company ends bid to restore SS United States to service

(NEW YORK) — The company that proposed restoring the cruise liner SS United States for oceangoing service has decided to cancel the project after deciding the obstacles were too great, The New York Times reported. The ship, which in the 1950s offered one of the most stylish ways to travel between New York and Europe, has been mothballed for decades on the Philadelphia waterfront. Earlier this year, Crystal Cruises commissioned a feasibility study to bring the ship back into service, but a combination of engineering and regulatory issues put success out of reach.
