Coast Guard orders evacuation of Honolulu Harbor on tsunami concerns

The following is the text of a press release issued by the U.S. Coast Guard:

(HONOLULU) – The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Honolulu is working with state and county officials to ensure public health and safety, Saturday. The Coast Guard captain of the port has ordered an evacuation of Honolulu Harbor and is urging mariners to monitor VHF channel 16 for information regarding when they can re-enter the harbor. Honolulu Harbor is closed to all inbound vessel traffic until further notice. All vessels must remain outside of all harbors until given authorization to enter by the state of Hawaii and Coast Guard officials.

Tsunami surges can continue for multiple days after the initial tsunami impact. Coast Guard and state officials will ensure all harbors are safe for re-entry prior to authorizing vessel entrance.

Mariners are advised that harbors may be closed for multiple days after the incident.
