Coast Guard, Lake Carriers' Association to partner on rescue training

The following is the text of a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard:

(CLEVELAND) — The United States Coast Guard and the Lake Carriers' Association (LCA) signed a memorandum of agreement for maritime rescue training Tuesday at the 9th Coast Guard District headquarters in Cleveland.

Signing for their respective parties was Rear Adm. Joanna M. Nunan, commander, 9th Coast Guard District, and James H.I. Weakley, president of the Lake Carriers' Association.

The agreement set forth terms for maritime industry rescue training between Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Mich., Coast Guard Air Station Detroit and LCA enrolled vessels.

"The experience gained by both Coast Guard and Lake Carriers' crews will greatly enhance both organizations capabilities," said Nunan. "Having the ability to safely and effectively execute rescues during an emergency will shorten the amount of time from notification to medical treatment. The opportunity to build familiarity and proficiency with hoisting from Great Lake's commercial vessels will better prepare our pilots for hoist operations during time critical emergencies."

The joint training is intended to simulate real-life medical evacuations.
