Coast Guard boat hits SC bridge; six injured

The following is the text of a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard:

(CHARLESTON, S.C.) — A Coast Guard crew was involved in a boating incident Sunday on the Stono River.

A Coast Guard Station Charleston 45-foot response boat-medium boat crew, consisting of six Coast Guard members, was responding to reports of a downed aircraft when the RBM allided with the Paul Gelegotis Bridge/Stono River Bridge at 10:08 p.m.   

The boat crew transited to St. John's Yacht Harbor where EMS were waiting and transported them to MUSC University Hospital for evaluation.

All six crewmembers sustained minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital.

The RBM sustained damage, but monetary damage estimates are unavailable at this time.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Coast Guard Station Charleston remains fully mission capable.
