Cargo ship officer pleads guilty to dumping oily waste at sea

(TAMPA, Fla.) — The first officer of a Korean cargo ship has pleaded guilty to spilling oily waste at sea and instructing his crew to lie about it, the Tampa Tribune newspaper reported. Oily waste from the Ocean Jade’s four cranes was dumped into the water instead of being collected in drums and treated. The first officer pleaded guilty to failure to maintain an oil record book and making false statements.
