(ARGENTIA, Newfoundland) — A cargo ship was towed to Argentia on Monday after losing propulsion and drifting within two miles of an ecological reserve in heavy seas, CBC News reported.
Baby Leeyn, formerly known as Jana, had been stranded in Newfoundland since 2014 after running into similar engine troubles offshore. The ship set sail for Romania on Saturday with a crew of 11 and made it about seven miles when its main engine failed and it began drifting.
The vessel was initially secured Sunday by Beverly M, a tugboat from Argentia hired by the owners of Baby Leeyn, but the towline parted in 10- to 12-foot seas and 35- to 45-knot winds. A second tugboat, Placentia Hope, then secured the ship and towed it to port.
Baby Leeyn was not carrying any cargo but had 250 tonnes of heavy fuel and 35 tonnes of marine diesel aboard.
