Canada looks to convert commercial ship to naval supply vessel

Hmcs Protecteur 20150514

(OTTAWA) — Canadian Defense Minister Jason Kenney announced Tuesday that the government will have discussions with Quebec's Davie Shipyard about retrofitting a commercial ship to serve as a temporary naval supply ship, CBC News reported. The move is needed because existing supply ships such as HMCS Protecteur have been forced into early retirement. A retrofitted ship would bridge the gap until a new navy support ship is operational, expected in 2021.
