Calif. ports approve low-sulfur fuel program for container ships

(TORRANCE, Calif.) — Harbor commissioners for the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have approved a program to encourage the use of low-sulfur fuels aboard container ships, the Daily Breeze newspaper of Torrance, Calif., reported. The voluntary program calls for the use of the cleaner fuel within 20 to 40 miles of the ports, with a speed limit of 12 knots during the fuel switchover. The ports will pay the extra cost, and most container ships are expected to participate.
