Bulker refloated three weeks after St. Lawrence grounding

(MASSENA, N.Y.) — A Canadian-flagged bulk carrier that ran aground in the St. Lawrence River three weeks ago was refloated Monday after lightering and assistance from three tugboats.

The 738-foot Tim S. Dool, loaded with Canadian wheat and en route from Port Weller, Ontario, to Quebec, grounded on Nov. 23 outside the navigation channel on the U.S. side of the river near Massena, N.Y.

An unsuccessful attempt was made on Nov. 25 to pull the ship free, which was followed by the removal of grain from its holds. Three tugs and four barges were involved in the salvage.

The ship, owned by Algoma Central Corp., was escorted by the tugs Ocean Tundra and Ocean Serge Genois to an anchorage near Wilson Hill, N.Y., for an inspection.

No injuries or pollution were reported. The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
