Brownsville yard to scrap aircraft carrier, its largest-ever vessel

(BROWNSVILLE, Texas) — The local International Shipbreaking Ltd. yard will scrap its largest vessel ever, as the mothballed USS Saipan arrives to be recycled, the Brownsville Herald newspaper reported. The 820-foot aircraft carrier was towed by tugboat from a reserve berth in Philadelphia. About 250 people will work on the dismantling of the decommissioned ship, one of the largest vessels ever to transit the Brownsville Ship Channel.
