Boxship breaks from berth in high winds, grounds in Prince Rupert

(PRINCE RUPERT, British Columbia) — Strong winds caused a containership to break from its berth at the Fairfield Container Terminal on Nov. 24 and ground on nearby Digby Island, the Prince Rupert Port Authority reported.

MSC Altair broke from its lines at about 2 p.m. and ran aground on the eastern side of the island. Multiple tugs refloated the ship, and the port authority said at 7:30 p.m. that MSC Altair was in the outer harbor with a tug escort and a BC Coast pilot on board.

When the wind subsided, the ship reportedly was moved to an anchorage to under a damage assessment. No injuries were reported, and the port authority said initial reports indicated “no significant damage to the vessel and no indications of marine pollution.”
