Bayonne, Staten Island officials open to various ideas for bridge

(BAYONNE, N.J.) — The mayor of Bayonne and the Staten Island, N.Y., borough president are open to various ideas to create more space for ships at the Bayonne Bridge, the Jersey Journal newspaper reported. Neither official has taken a specific position on whether the solution should be a new higher bridge, a draw bridge, jacking up the existing bridge or replacing the bridge with a tunnel under Kill Van Kull. Port authority and shipping officials prefer a draft of 215 feet for the larger, next-generation container ships versus the current 151 to 156 of space under the bridge.
