Barge strikes, damages New Jersey bridge in high winds (PHOTO)

(AVALON, N.J.) — A barge broke loose in high winds and struck the underside of the Townsends Inlet Bridge, the Press newspaper of Atlantic City reported. Railings and a section of walkway were damaged, and the bridge is closed indefinitely as engineers check its structural integrity. The barge, whose spuds failed to hold, was part of a project to service the bridge’s fenders.
