Barge strike damages Virginia drawbridge

(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) — A local drawbridge is operating on a alternative lift schedule after being struck by a barge early Tuesday morning, WTKR News reported. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the impact damaged both the fender system and the North Landing Bridge, which was open when the incident occurred at about 0345 hours. The 65-year-old bridge spans the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal between Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
