(VICKSBURG, Miss.) — A grain barge sank Thursday afternoon after a 30-barge tow struck the old U.S. 80 bridge over the Mississippi River, with other barges breaking free, The Vicksburg Post reported.
A U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said the towboat Jeffrey G. was traveling southbound with the tow when it struck the bridge. Bridge Superintendent Herman Smith said the tow struck pier No. 4, which is on the Louisiana side of the span. He said the railroad bridge has been closed and a bridge engineer was on his way to examine the pier.
The barges that broke free were corralled with help from Ergon Marine.
