Ballast water treatment company appeals Coast Guard's MPN decision

(NORRESUNDBY, Denmark) — DESMI Ocean Guard is appealing the U.S. Coast Guard’s decision not to allow the most probable number (MPN) sampling method for UV-based ballast water treatment systems, The Motorship reported. In December, the Coast Guard confirmed that it had written to four suppliers of UV systems to notify them that MPN would not be accepted as an alternative means of testing for the USCG type-approval process. DESMI, the manufacturer of RayClean ballast water management systems, warned that the Coast Guard’s preliminary decision would have serious consequences for shipowners, crews and the environment if not changed.
