AWO official: La. towing company had failed safety audits

(NEW ORLEANS) — The towing company involved in the July oil spill at New Orleans had failed safety audits earlier in the year, the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper reported. An American Waterways Operators safety official, testifying at a Coast Guard hearing, said DRD Towing was booted from the AWO in August. A DRD lawyer said the company was attempting to gain provisionary status.
