The following is the text of a news release from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA):
(KINGS POINT, N.Y.) — The Middle States Commission on Higher Education granted the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy full reaccreditation on Nov. 16 after determining the institution meets the commission’s rigorous and comprehensive standards in displaying characteristics of excellence in higher education.
Rear Adm. James Helis, USMMA superintendent, said, “I thank all of the staff, faculty and midshipmen who worked so hard to achieve this milestone.”
In accordance with Middle States’ transition to an eight-year reaccreditation cycle, the academy’s next full reaccreditation review will be in 2024.
From June 24, 2016:
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) issued their expected determination regarding accreditation, and while they found the academy’s academic foundation is sound, and in many ways exemplary, they issued a warning with recommendations regarding two broad areas separate from academics: combating sexual harassment and assault, particularly during Sea Year; and governance of the USMMA. The academy was given two years to reach compliance, and we are confident that we can return to compliance within that span of time. The academy remains accredited while we work with MSCHE to address the requirements and recommendations, and ensures the highest caliber education for the academy’s midshipmen.
