Furuno Electric Co., Ltd. has unveiled a new series of multi-function displays (MFDs) designed to bolster navigational safety and efficiency for tugboats and workboats.

The new series – named NavNet TZtouchXL – “incorporates state-of-the-art radar, electronic chart, and sonar capabilities into wheelhouse workstations, tailored to withstand even the most challenging maritime conditions,” according to the company.

“When integrated with a Furuno DRS Radar, the NavNet TZtouchXL series unlocks two pivotal safety functionalities,” Furuno said. “The Risk Visualizer provides a 360-degree visual representation of approaching objects, highlighting potential collision risks around the vessel.”

Concurrently, the AI Avoidance Route feature plots safe navigation routes around hazards, which can be directly sent to a Furuno NAVpilot series autopilot for automated course adjustments.

“Dynamic icons are automatically created for targets with the highest probability of collision, ensuring that the information needed to maintain safe distances when passing is readily available,” said Furuno.

“TZtouchXL displays are not only limited to radar and sonar capabilities, but also support advanced navigation tools tailored for tugboat and workboat operations.”

That functionality includes displaying Automatic Identification System (AIS) information and autopilot control, along with new chart plotting features from TZ MAPS charts, which have full vector capabilities “that ensure clear and detailed navigation, customizable color palettes, and enhanced chart object visualization.”

Additionally, tugboat and workboat operators can receive a TimeZero account, “enabling efficient data management, including backup and cloud retrieval of operational information,” said Furuno.

The introduction of the NavNet TZtouchXL series, it said, “marks a significant advancement in maritime navigation technology by integrating cutting-edge display technology with advanced safety features.”
