Amid Dali probe, NTSB urges action to prevent future bridge strikes 

The revamped fender system on the Sunshine Skyway bridge. The predecessor to this bridge collapsed in 1980 following a ship strike, spurring new emphasis on protecting bridges from ship strikes. However, many bridges were built before these new standards, including the Key Bridge in Baltimore, and there is currently no mechanism to require bridge owners to take further precautions.
