Allen says Coast Guard to reduce operations under tighter budget

(WASHINGTON) — The commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard said budget cuts will force the agency to scale back operations as it concentrates on replacing aging vessels, the Washington Post newspaper reported. Adm. Thad Allen said the Coast Guard risks becoming a “hollow force” if it doesn’t invest in modernizing vessels. Members of Congress from both parties criticized the Obama Administration’s proposed budget reductions.
