Alaska communities try to cope with toxic derelict ships

(HOMER, Alaska) — Towns on the Alaska coast are trying to cope with derelict ships they never expected to have, the Homer News weekly newspaper reported. As absentee owners fail to clean them up, the Coast Guard steps in and formulates removal plans that include private salvage crews. Some of the old ships carry more toxic materials than typical vessels usually would.
