Airbag project aims to save ships, lives and the environment

(BREMEN, Germany) — Could airbags keep damaged ships afloat? That's the premise behind SuSy, an EU-funded project that has been taken to the "proof of concept" phase aboard a Greek tanker, Phys.org reports. "Our challenge was to produce enormous amounts of gas from small cartridges which is quickly released into inflatables," says project partner Reinhard Ahlers, managing director of Balance, a maritime consultancy in Germany. Critics have raised questions about cost and reliability.
