Airbag project aims to save ships, lives and the environment


(BREMEN, Germany) — Could airbags keep damaged ships afloat? That's the premise behind SuSy, an EU-funded project that has been taken to the "proof of concept" phase aboard a Greek tanker, reports. "Our challenge was to produce enormous amounts of gas from small cartridges which is quickly released into inflatables," says project partner Reinhard Ahlers, managing director of Balance, a maritime consultancy in Germany. Critics have raised questions about cost and reliability.
