Ships need new U.S. permits to discharge ballast, gray water

(NORFOLK, Va.) — Beginning Dec. 19, ships that release ballast water into U.S. waterways will require a permit under the Clean Water Act, the Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported. The new permits also cover deck runoff and “gray water” discharges. The new rules are designed to keep the environment clean and also prevent the spread of invasive species.
