Pilot fatigue blamed in Maryland coal ship grounding

(BALTIMORE) — The Coast Guard said pilot inattentiveness caused a coal carrier to run aground in the Chesapeake Bay, the Baltimore Sun reported. The pilot reported that he got only three hours of sleep beforehand because he had been awake watching his girlfriend’s children. The crew of the MV Montrose said the pilot may have been asleep in his chair when the ship ran aground.
