Feds don’t join industry lawsuit against new Mass. escort-tug law

(NEW BEDFORD, Mass.) — Unlike during the Bush adminstration, the current Justice Department and Coast Guard are not posing a legal challenge to a state law in Massachusetts that establishes new tugboat escort requirements for oil shipments, the Cape Cod Times reported. American Waterways Operators and other industry groups including the Chamber of Shipping are not getting federal backing for their lawsuit attempting to have the state law overturned. The law, which covers shipments of 6,000 barrels or more, went into effect March 29.
