General Statement of Duties: 

  • The First Assistant Engineer assists the Chief Engineer with the overall operation, maintenance, and repair of shipboard systems and equipment.   Duties include watch standing, routine maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery, maintaining an inventory of spare parts and supplies necessary for maintenance and repairs, ensuring cleanliness of the ship’s engineering spaces, and assisting with outside contractors for the installation and repair of shipboard systems.  
  • The First Assistant Engineer may be required to stand watch in the engineering spaces; assuming responsibility for the operation of the engineering plant and maintaining operational logs and records. 
  • The First Assistant Engineer will assist the Chief Engineer in coordinating the work of other Assistant Engineers, unlicensed engineering personnel, and Cadets.
  • Additionally, the First Assistant Engineer will ensure that the vessel’s maintenance and repair records are properly and accurately maintained in the computerized maintenance management system.
  • A key role for all crew members is to support the training of cadets and the unique mission of the Academy; the 1AE may be asked to train cadets in some circumstances.
  • All selected candidates must comply with Mass. Maritime Academy military customs, uniforms and ranks and participate in random drug screening.
  • All selected candidates must participate in the annual Sea Term, Mini-Cruise, shipyard periods, and other vessel deployments or utilizations.  In addition, the candidate must be available for on-call periods while the vessel is alongside on nights and weekends.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in recognized academic discipline. 
  • Hold USCG License as an unlimited First Assistant Engineer, Motor, Unlimited Horsepower with appropriate STCW endorsements for international voyages.
  • At least 2 years’ experience as First Assistant Engineer or military equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel propulsion and electrical generating systems, fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning.
  • Possess strong time management skills: able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Exhibit excellent computer, oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess Industry experience with diesel – electric propulsion. 
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Understand the unique mission of the university as a maritime academy.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience working with diverse populations is highly valued.

Salary: $95,000 to $100,000. The Academy offers generous benefits policies and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Academy is not sponsoring immigration visas at this time.  FLSA Status: Exempt
